What Labor of Science is
Labor of Science is an independent platform created by a UNC Chapel Hill student that connects students with study partners and mentors in chemistry and related fields. This page explains what information we collect, why, and how you can control it.
Information we collect
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and role (student, faculty, or professional mentor). Depending on what you choose to fill in, you may also add: class year, major, lab group, phone number, LinkedIn profile, school or affiliation, courses you’re taking, research interests, campus affiliations, and academic achievements. All of this beyond your name, email, and role is optional and editable any time in Settings.
If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google. We never see or store your Google password.
How we use it
Your information is used to match you with study partners in shared courses, connect students with mentors, show your profile in the Directory (only if you opt in, in Settings), and send you account-related email, like Study Bond match notifications, if you have those enabled.
Who can see your information
Your profile is only visible to other signed-in members, never to the public internet. Whether you appear in the Mentor Directory at all is controlled by a setting you can turn off any time. Contact information like phone number and LinkedIn is shown only if you choose to add it.
Third-party services
We use Supabase to host our database and manage accounts, Google for optional sign-in, and Resend to deliver account-related emails like confirmation codes. We don’t sell your data to anyone, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Your controls
You can edit or remove any optional information from your profile at any time in Settings. You can also permanently delete your account and all associated data from the Settings page, which removes your profile, study group memberships, flashcard decks, and notes.
